Lake County Family Sues Blue Buffalo in Class Action Alleging Misleading “Healthy” Dog Food Marketing After Death of Beloved Pet

LAKE COUNTY, ILLINOIS - A Lake County, Illinois family has filed a class action lawsuit against Blue Buffalo Company Ltd. after their dog died from dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a serious heart disease that research has linked to grain-free dog food. Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois by The G Law Group, along with co-counsel Florek Law, the lawsuit is brought on behalf of plaintiffs Ryan Walsh and Diana Walsh.

Growing evidence linking grain-free diets to DCM

The lawsuit alleges Blue Buffalo’s grain-free products have continuously been linked in scientific studies and FDA investigations to diet-related DCM and other adverse cardiac conditions in dogs. Dilated cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that reduces the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively, often leading to heart failure and death.

It cites multiple complaints to the FDA regarding this link, as well as clinical research showing that grain-free diets, especially those containing peas, can interfere with taurine absorption. Taurine is an amino acid that is essential for myocardial health. The filing references research showing that dogs’ heart function improved after switching from grain-free to grain-inclusive diets and receiving taurine supplementation.

Blue Buffalo accused of promoting grain-free food despite DCM concerns

The lawsuit alleges that, despite thousands of FDA complaints and a growing body of research linking grain-free dog food to DCM, Blue Buffalo continued to market its products as “the healthiest food possible” made with “the finest natural ingredients.” It claims the company was aware of these concerns through internal research, veterinary studies, and consumer reports, yet continued promoting its grain-free formulas as premium, health-supporting options.

The complaint further alleges that this messaging led consumers, including the Walsh family, to believe the food would support their dog’s long-term health. The plaintiffs fed their Goldendoodle, Maya, Blue Buffalo Wilderness Chicken Recipe Adult High-Protein Grain-Free Dry Dog Food for years in reliance on those representations.

Maya’s battle with heart disease after years of grain-free food

According to the lawsuit, Maya was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy in 2023 after exhibiting symptoms including weakness, difficulty walking, and cardiac arrhythmias. Veterinary testing confirmed severe heart enlargement and DCM, and Maya required intensive treatment including cardiac medications and dietary changes. Despite those efforts, Maya’s condition deteriorated and she died from congestive heart failure in October 2024 at the age of 10.

Potentially millions included in the class action & damages sought

The proposed class action includes potentially millions of consumers nationwide who purchased Blue Buffalo grain-free dog food and allegedly paid a premium based on the company’s health-related marketing claims. Damages the lawsuit seeks include the cost of the dog food, veterinary expenses related to diagnosing and treating heart disease, medication and specialized diet costs, and injunctive relief requiring changes to Blue Buffalo’s marketing and consumer warnings about potential health risks.

“This case is about a large corporation marketing a product as the ‘best pet food possible, made with the finest natural ingredients’ while ignoring evidence of serious health risks,” said Simeon Genadiev of The G Law Group. “When corporations make that choice, a choice that puts profits over the health and safety of a family’s pet, they must be held accountable.”
